Organizing a child’s closet is a bit trickier than an adult’s closet. Not only are you dealing with different sized items you most likely have to organize toys as well.  The organizational system will depend on the age of the child, but you will still need to help them out regardless.  A great tip to keep in mind is to let your children help with the system.  They will feel more independent and will take interest in putting their clothes and toys away in the proper compartments.

Other ways to keep your child’s closet organized is with the use of labels. If label makeryour child is too young to read you can incorporate labels with photos of the items, which will teach them at a young age to stay, organized.  If they can read you can label compartment with the toys general category, for example ‘cars’ or ‘legos’.  Hangers may be difficult for younger children, so you may want to consider shelves low enough for little ones to reach.  Another great idea is a hamper for kid’s to put their dirty clothes into, much better than finding the clothes on the floor.

Consider adding hooks for hats, robes, and jackets will also save some space in the closet.  Another necessity in a child’s room is a Shoe Rack.  Never again will you here the infamous, ‘where’s my sneaker, or shoe?’  Adjustable rods are great space savers for your child’s closet.  You can place items that your child needs to grow into or special items that need to be separated from everyday clothing.

Once you have decided on a system that will work for your child, you will have to teach them how to keep their items organized.  Once you teach them on a daily basis to keep their closet organized in time they will learn to keep it organized on their own. The goal is to teach your children at an early age to keep their closets and rooms organized.  This will not only make your life easier but it will instill the sense of independence and organization in your child’s life at an early age.

Getting organized is a task that seems to be on everyone’s mind especially during the springtime weather; perhaps that’s why they call it spring-cleaning.  One of the main rooms that seem to need organization is that of children, more importantly their closets. It is the first place that they will toss their items when told to clean up their rooms.  Teaching them at a young age about organization will ease some stress for both the parent and the child.

kid's hooksThe best thing to do is to transform their closets into an area that they can reach items.  Place hooks at their level and they will be able to hang their jackets or towels on them.  Using plastic storage bins will also help with the tiny toys that seem to accumulate in a child’s room.  Labeling them with names or pictures will teach the child where each item should be placed.  For items that should be kept out of place or reach, install shelves above the hanging rods and place the container out of reach.

Baskets and storage containers are great for kid’s closets because they can simply throw toys into them without the need of organizing. These work great for younger children who don’t quite understand where certain items should go.  The most important thing to remember is that in order to maintain your kid’s closet organized you may need to go in their rooms everyday and show them where each item belongs.  Shoe racks and hanging shelves that can hang from the clothes rod are great ways to organize items as well.

Whatever method you choose, being consistent is the key to keeping a child’s closet organized. They will not understand it right away but when they are able to locate items quickly because they are placed in the proper place and when they can hang their own clothes they will have that sense of accomplishment, which will lead to more.  An organized child’s closet can lead to an organized teen’s closet or one can hope.  Instilling the values of organization at an early age will definitely create a less cluttered room and life in the end.
