Cleaning out your closet always seems to be very difficult. Once the decision is made to tackle the task, you will be happy that you did. The most difficult part of cleaning your closet is determining what items will go back into your closet. To help with this decision first begin by removing every article from your closet. You might want to begin in stages if you don’t have a few hours to spare.

Be sure to have boxes or bags available, so when you decide to dispose of an item you can place in appropriate container without the chance of changing your mind. Here are some tips to guide you in making the decision on what to keep and not to keep.
1. Check the item for stains or tears – if the article of clothing has either of these, it is time to dispose
2. Size – if the item is too big or too small, it is time to dispose or donate
3. Style – it is true that some styles are cyclic, but some should not be, so dispose of those items as well
4. Time – if it has been over a year since you last wore an item, it is time to donate unless it is seasonal, but most likely you will never wear again if it’s been over a year.
Cleaning out your closet although time consuming should be done at least once a year. If you can maintain your closet clean and organized you will be able to see what you wear and what you don’t and dispose of it quicker. You will then have more room for other items you will wear more often. These same tips can apply to all the closets and drawers in your home, the more you keep up with them the less clutter you will have.

The best way to keep any project organized is by categorizing. Using storage containers and grouping items will keep your area not only clutter-free but you will be able to locate items quicker and easier. Using the categorization process in your closet will help keep your closet clean as well.

Categorizing your closet is not a difficult task. You must first begin by removing all the items. Determine if you are going to categorize by color or items such as shirts, pants, skirts, etc. You can also categorize further by hanging clothes and those that must be folded. Once this is determined you can begin to group your items. You can utilize shelves to place the folded clothes and the use of baskets and drawers will help in organizing your closet as well.

Another great way to organize your closet and keep things together is by using hooks. Hooks work great for belts, ties, hats and purses. If you are lucky enough to have a closet large enough you may decide to keep your jewelry in there as well. Keeping everything in one place will make it easier to make your choices in the morning. You may decide on a traditional jewelry box or use decorative boxes and hooks for smaller items. Perhaps a mannequin would work as well where you can display the outfit you will work the next morning.

Categorizing your closet will keep all your items in one place and easier to find. Once you have a system developed it will be easier to maintain and keep clean. Think outside of the box for organizing. Who says you have to use traditional organizing shelving units, consider using an antique dresser or baker’s rack in your closet. You’d me amazed at the everyday items that can be used to help organize your space. As long as you keep items categorized you will be less stressed because your closets will be a joy to approach. The possibilities are endless.
